The Hunter

BY P.S.GIFFORD

The thin mist curled grey against the lush green, patch of grass, nestled like a haven almost directly in the heart of Grainger woods. The morning sun rose slowly in the near cloudless sky. Our hunter fluently and with obvious skill, traveled over the blades of grass almost without disturbing it. He spied his victim, and paused for the briefest of moments. Then with stealth he sped towards her as corpulent amounts of saliva began to uncontrollably drip from his scowling mouth. There was a sudden sound, as somewhere high in the branches an owl hoots, and all at once his victim becomes aware of the hunters presence. They desperately attempt to free themselves as our hunter loomed closer still. Yet their struggle only results in them getting more entangled in our hunter’s well conceived trap…

All at once there is a thunderous shriek from directly behind the hunter, he looked up in a panic and suddenly a gigantic object crushed him beyond recognition.

“Yuk, mommy!” Sally said as the three year old gaily continued to skip along through the pasture. “I have just trodden on something horrible and sticky.”

It was then she saw it. The struggling brightly colored red and black ladybird trapped in the spider web. And moments later after scraping the mangled dead spider from her bare foot, and onto the grass, she affectionately reached over and freed her…Sally giggled joyously, and her mother watched on peacefully, as the ladybird flew away to safety.
